The Journey to Brighter Skin

Bright, glowing skin, it’s a look we all strive for. Unfortunately, most of us battle some level of hyperpigmentation brought on by many factors ranging from medications to sun exposure to hormonal changes and acne or trauma.

Understanding hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation can occur in any skin type – oily, dry, dark and light. Simply put, it is excessive stimulation of melanin in the skin that results in uneven, darkened skin tone. Excessive melanin production can occur from systemic (within the body) and extrinsic (outside) causes.
Common causes:
  • Large melanocyte cells
  • Medications and chemicals
  • Sun exposure
  • Hormonal changes
  • Pregnancy –referred to as melasma
  • Acne trauma and inflammation
The primary extrinsic culprit of hyperpigmentation is the sun. In many cases, the effects can be amplified with medications and chemicals (like perfume). In all hyperpigmentation cases, however, sun exposure inevitably makes it worse.

The journey to brighter skin

It will be up to you to assess your client’s skin and determine what will be the best fit. There are many solutions from melanin suppressants to peels and more mild home-care systems.

Treatment results vary greatly depending on discoloration level (cellular or superficial). Through a combination of home care and professional treatments there can be significant change and correction.

Home care:
Professional treatments:
  • Melanin Suppressant Facial
  • Brightening Up Peel
  • Vibrant Glow Facial
  • Melanin Lift
Remember with any brightening program you will want to incorporate an epidermal growth factor and daily sunscreen. To learn more about various brightening programs and hyperpigmentation, refer to the protocols in the Downloads section.

I believe most of mine is from sun exposure. When I was in elementary school, running around all summer in just short was a regular thing. Sunscreen was never applied. Now I understand how it works and even with sunscreen, new spots form after being out on the road for hours running and on my bike. I do have a question though.

Let say that I take every precaution to protect myself from the sun now. Could hyperpigmentation that occurs now be from the past exposure and there is nothing I can do about it?

I love using the RA products for pigmentation at my spa. My clients see a visible difference very quickly. The home-care products are amazing and easy to use. Quick question, what is the best treatment ot do on someone of Indian decent with PIH due to acne?

Rhonda Allison's combination of facials, peels and homecare provide the best results I've seen for pigmentation of any product. This is such a difficult condition to manage and I keep my clients on a stringent regimen of regular facials and peels combined with their home care. They love the results and they love Rhonda Allison.

Ethnic skin types are more of a challenge and when the trauma is from acne that adds to the issue. There are many peels and treatment programs available though. The Modified Melanin Lift using 10% TCA could be a good start and sometimes just the daily home care - Mega Serum with Epidermal Growth Factor is very helpful for discolored acne lesions. Feel free to speak with any of our corporate team about this.

Frank -it is true some hyperpigmentation is from early childhood damage and is just showing up. But there is always something to do about this - skin will become brighter and healthier with our lightening products - growth factor - and SPF and you want to prevent further damage.

Rhonda, do you have any suggestions for treating hands that are hyperpigmented? This summer the spots are popping out like crazy. I would love to know how to take care of hands since that are always in sun, water and in my case, chemicals. I want to have healthier and younger looking hands...help.

About the hands - I recommend using the same products above for you hands that are used for the face! Also, dont forget to put sunscreen on the top of your hands everyday!

I also try to keep my hands towards the bottom of my steering wheel when driving to prevent sun exposure to them while driving.

Prevention is key - and remember that when using lightening products it is imperative to use sunscreen during the day!

I hope this helps:)

Good tips Jewls - hands do tend to be more difficult for the obvious. But a lot of improvement can be made. Mega Serum at night with the PhytoEndorphin hand cream makes a big difference. Lots of the enzymes are great for hand treatments. But pretty much anything you do for the face can be used on the hands. I also sold my clients fun little cotton gloves to wear during the day and while driving. They were a big hit.
